Draft
talk troubling
Thursday, July 15, 2004 The prospect of re-establishing the military draft is very disconcerting. It is most unfortunate that our current leadership has destabilized the world to such a degree that our volunteer military is unable to meet the demands. It is even more unfortunate that the spirit of revenge is so widespread and war is seen as the only viable alternative to settle international disputes. A military draft would force young people into a situation where they would be required to forsake God's will for a peaceful world and kill their fellow human beings, many of whom are innocent civilians. As in previous wars, these young people would come primarily from low-income families and people of color. There are options for those who choose not to prepare for war or participate in military service. I would encourage young people to prepare now to establish themselves as peacemakers.
