Salute all fallen Thursday, June 24, 2004 The weekend Ronald Reagan died I spent in Corpus Christi with my family, celebrating the fifth birthday of my younger grandson. I did not listen to the news all weekend, so when I heard the government declaring Friday, June 11, a national day of mourning I assumed that we were mourning the American men and women who died in Iraq, plus the Iraqi civilians who also died. Wrong. I am not going to present my views of President Reagan, who had his good side and his bad side. What is most important to me, and to us, is that we value human life. It is more dear than oil, than dollars and than power. And so I do regret the sad loss of a former president to the ravages of Alzheimer's disease, but I also regret the passing of people whose families also valued their lives, to a war that need not have happened.
