Out with Rumsfeld Friday, May 14, 2004 If Secretary Donald Rumsfeld had been unaware of the sadistic torture techniques that were used at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, he should resign. If he is unaware of the interrogation techniques of torture and terror that are taught at U.S. military installations, unaware of the involvement of military intelligence in torture, executions and other human right abuses, he is derelict. Thousands of citizens gather each year at the gates of Fort Benning to protest the infamous School of the Americas. We have also demonstrated at the Pentagon, White House and we have lobbied Capitol Hill. The Pentagon was forced to release the content of its training manuals. Where was the Secretary of Defense? It appears, however, that Secretary Rumsfeld was informed about the conditions at the Abu Ghraib prison and chose to disregard them. Ignoring the reports of Bremer, Taguba, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch was not only a blatant offense against the American people, it is destructive to our nation's image worldwide. His posturing is now perceived as nothing more than lies and platitudes. We should bid him farewell. Martha Moore
