Bush's call Tuesday, 22 July, 2003
The CIA, knowing the charge was false, refused to allow sourcing to them. There was a British dossier mentioning the Niger uranium and the CIA agreed that Bush could mention that British reference. There is ample evidence that the CIA knew the Niger document was a forgery. For example, a former diplomat sent to Niger a year earlier to investigate at the behest of the CIA, and Dick Cheney's office told them so. Are we to believe that Dick Cheney, who - unlike any other vice president in history - was camped out at the CIA, was not told about the forgery? Are we to believe that Dick Cheney didn't mention it to Bush? Isn't it simpler to believe that Bush lied? And, finally: Whose job is it to make sure that the State of the Union speech is accurate? George Tenet's or George Bush's? Peg MacPhail
