It's about money Tuesday, 27 May, 2003 It's hard to determine if the Caller-Times editorial staff is being a shill for administration propaganda or just ignorant of the facts, in its editorial of May 14, "War wasn't about oil at all." In October of 2002, the Houston Chronicle and Pravda, for gosh sake, reported on the oil summit held in Houston (sponsored by Landmark, a subsidiary of Haliburton) between American and Russian oil companies to divide interests in Iraqi oil. Between Iraq's 4 million and Russia's 5 million barrels per day the U.S. could tell OPEC to take a hike. The only problem was we didn't control Iraqi oil (the U.N. did) and Iraq and Russia needed American capital to reach maximum production. Haliburton received a $7 billion government, no-bid contract (classified until March 2003) for restoring Iraqi oil production. Oil income will be managed by the U.S. Do the profits that campaign donors make count as mercenary? The Carlyle Group (Poppa Bush) produces parts for the AH-64 Apache Helicopter; logistics support for Army vehicles and Air Force jets; Bradley fighting vehicles and does homeland security background checks. Haliburton subsidiary Kellog Brown & Root has made: $3.8 billion for worldwide military logistic support. In retrospect, I have to agree with the editors; this war wasn't about oil, it was about money. John Kelley
