Dissent is OK Monday, 26 May, 2003 In response to Kip Bellah's May 7 letter, I strongly disagree. Nationalism is not patriotism. Wrapping oneself tightly in the flag does not make one a patriot any more than praying for God to help your side win makes one a religiously faithful person. To support the troops while publicly disowning the policy of the civilian government who commits them and us to war is not an ambiguity. To support them means to let them know that we hope for their personal safety and trust that they will act with courage and restraint to provide that the fewest lives possible are lost on both sides of the conflict. It is to tell them that I have every confidence in their abilities, their moral character, and that I believe that their military leaders are competent and will act in their best interests, as well as ours. To question the civilian leadership when one believes the policies are not in the best interest of the nation and its military is the patriotic and moral responsibility of each citizen. Our founders held that belief and so do I. Thom Walker |
