Following orders Wednesday, 14 May, 2003 When President Bush told the Iraqi troops before the war that they would be prosecuted in war crimes tribunals, and that "just following orders" is not an excuse, he is agreeing with Kip Bellah's letter of May 7 which insists that it is impossible to support the troops but not the war. If, as Bush and Bellah argue, it is impossible to separate a person from his actions, then every soldier in history who was "just following orders," including every American soldier in Iraq, is a criminal.
