American right Saturday, 3 May, 2003 I am upset about letters to the editor in recent days where the authors called dissenters against the president misguided and unpatriotic, or unless we believe in the war against Iraq, we don't support our troops. I believe the president's action against Iraq was premature and was guided by non-elected advisers who had an agenda quite different than ridding the world of weapons of mass destruction. I also believe we have a patriotic duty to voice our opinions when we disagree with the president's actions. President Theodore Roosevelt was quoted in the Kansas City Star on May 7, 1918: "To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about anyone else." James H. Tansey |
