A new Chile Thursday, 24 April, 2003 Having lived and worked in and studied Chile for several years, perhaps I can expand a bit on the letter by Cliff Jones (April 7). I am sure that his experience with the longshoremen who "misloaded" the cooper on his ship in Valparaiso is a true story. The people of Chile, at that time, were outraged at what they felt was the exploitation by the United States of the natural resources of Chile, of which copper was predominate. What he saw was freedom of speech in action. Chileans have sharp memories of 1973, when, with CIA involvement, Salvadore Allende, a freely elected president, was assassinated and replaced with a reign of terror under Pinochet, a ruthless dictator. Chile is now back on track, and has become a beacon of hope for all of South America. Santiago is a great modern city. Its shops are crammed with high quality and expensivegoods. Its streets and parks are immaculately clean. All of this my family and I witnessed when we revisited Chile for the first time in 40 years this Christmas. The decision of Chile not to be in lockstep with the warlords of the United States is one, which I believe, must be respected in a free world. Dana S. Green
