Letters to the Editor Sunday, 16 March, 2003 Vote for peace Your position that the City Council should not consider a peace resolution is shortsighted. It behooves government to address those issues within its jurisdiction. Isn't it within the jurisdiction of the council to address the future of our community? Isn't it within the council's mandate to vote on our fiscal future and moral character? The minimum projected cost of the Iraqi war is $80 billion to $100 billion? Isn't that important to a city facing rising tuition at TAMU-CC, possible closing of Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital and reductions at the State School? Aren't the ramifications of firing 800 missiles on Baghdad in a 48-hour period significant? Doesn't that sound like mass destruction? The South Texas Alliance for Peace is aware of the importance of the military to Corpus Christi. We do not favor cruel dictators or terrorists. We represent those with serious questions about the wisdom, morality and legality of attacking Iraq. In the tradition of our country, dissent and the minority voice have proven worthy of consideration. We deserve that consideration from the council. The city councils across this country that passed peace resolutions, as well as those that did not, were simply performing the job for which they were elected Susan J.
