County to consider resolution supporting the military

Tuesday, 25 March, 2003

By Janell Ross Caller-Times

Nueces County Commissioners will consider a resolution formally supporting President George Bush and members of the military at Wednesday's meeting.

The commissioners meet at 1:30 p.m. in the Commissioners Courtroom of the courthouse.

"The beautiful thing about our country is that we can have differences of opinion and are free to express them," Commissioner Chuck Cazalas said. "The person protecting that freedom is the soldier. And I think that it is appropriate that we support our soldiers as a county."

Susan Peeples, chairperson of the South Texas Alliance for Peace, said that the group's members also support the men and women who are fighting in the war. But, Peeples said that support for the conflict and support for military personnel are two distinct issues.

"I wish that they would separate support for the troops from support for the action in Iraq," Peeples said. "All of us are concerned about the men and women involved in the conflict and want them to come home safely. What I also wish is that when you have people who have taken an honorable oath to let other people decide whether they will live or die, that the people making the decisions would make wise choices, moral choices."

Three weeks ago, a member of the peace alliance read a resolution opposing the war with Iraq in a Corpus Christi City Council meeting. The group asked the council to consider placing an anti-war resolution on its next agenda so that the council could vote on it and potentially place Corpus Christi on record as opposing the war.

Mayor Loyd Neal adjourned the City Council meeting immediately after the anti-war resolution was read. Council members did not discuss the resolution during the meeting, but afterward said that they felt it would be inappropriate for the council to get involved in an international issue. An anti-war resolution has not appeared on subsequent agendas.

"I think that a resolution may be fine for the county," Neal said. "It's obvious that there is a great deal of support for the military in this town and I think that's a good idea for the commissioners. I don't anticipate that we (the City Council) will be doing anything like this, unless one of the council members brings it up."

Cazalas said that he has not discussed the details of the resolution with any of the other county commissioners. But, he did mention the resolution to Commissioner Betty Jean Longoria and County Judge Terry Shamsie late last week.

"I don't have a problem with it (the resolution) at all," Longoria said. "To me, it means I am supporting the President, supporting the troops and supporting the conflict. I see that as the right thing to do."
