After the initial volleys by United States and British
armed forces on Iraq, members of the South Texas Alliance for Peace gathered,
signs in hand, to protest the invasion of the Middle Eastern country.
We support our troops," said Khaled Zitooni as he stood with five other members of the peace group outside the federal courthouse on Shoreline Boulevard Wednesday night. "We want peace for everyone and we are against invasions . . . Without the United Nations consent, there should be no war. We should lead by example, not by being the bully of the world." As vehicles drove past, many of the motorists honking horns and holding up their fingers in a sign of peace, Susan Peeples said the members of the alliance would take shifts standing in front of the federal courthouse. She said they expect more members to show up today. "It's important that people know we support our troops," she said. "We hope to join the rally (on Saturday) in support of our troops." Those present at the protest said they support the troops and are thankful for the job they have shouldered. "They are doing our job," said Judy Loverde. The rally to support people serving in the military will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sherrill Park.
