Caller-Times Editorial: Council's reluctance to get bogged down in Iraq issue well-founded

Sometimes it is not only desirable but necessary to take a stand on matters of great moment. There are times when taking such a stand would be at best in-appropriate and at worst damaging.

In this connection, credit should go to Mayor Loyd Neal and his City Council colleagues for firmly rejecting a call for the council to go on record regarding a possible U.S. invasion of Iraq.

During the public comment period of Tuesday's meeting, a representative of the South Texas Alliance for Peace read an anti-war proclamation, then asked the council to place on its next agenda an item requiring a vote on the issue. There were no takers, and Neal gaveled the meeting into adjournment.

Corpus Christi thus declined to follow the lead of Austin, where such a resolution won approval. Other Texas cities are also dealing with the issue, or dodging it.

From here, our council's inaction makes perfect sense. Getting the community all wrapped round the axle over an issue that has nothing whatever to do with municipal government would be a waste of the council's limited store of time and energy.
