Local anti-war group gains new members A pastor at City Hall rally calls for Bush administration to further justify Iraq war By Mike Baird, Caller-Times Patriots For America, an anti-war group that began with a few supporters meeting at the Lotus Cup coffee shop, now appears to have attracted hundreds of supporters in less than a month's time. Hundreds met on the steps of the Corpus Christi City Hall at 6 p.m. Thursday to hear organizers discuss the anti-war group's mission. The meeting started with a prayer for soldiers and a moment of silence for U.S. military troops and the people of Iraq. The group sang "America the Beautiful."
Seventy people registered with Patriots For America for the first time Thursday, bringing the total to 150 who have registered to be part of the group, organizers said. A peace march and rally is planned for 4 p.m. Feb. 15 to begin in front of the federal courthouse. At least one person had a sign appearing directly aimed at the Bush administration, which says Iraq might have to be disarmed by force in the coming weeks. Deloris Dees, 69, arrived carrying a sign that said "1936 Germany - 2003 U.S.A." She's a retired residential appraiser and substitute teacher. The Rev. David Owen, 32, of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Corpus Christi, spoke about the need to justify a war to the American people and the need to justify a military occupation of Iraq. Anthony Quiroz, a history professor at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, spoke as a parent of an 18-year-old son and as a teacher of college students. "I don't want my son to fight and kill and die on a whim," Quiroz said. "Or for any number of reasons." Quiroz's son Eric is a senior at King High School. "I think people need to show their support for peace and exercise our right for freedom," said Eric Quiroz. Organizers said they are planning their next meeting for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Holy Cross Catholic Church at 1109 N.
