Vigil spurs others, countervigils

About 70 people gather at Cole Park Amphitheater

By adriana garza Caller-Times

Irma McGregor clutched a framed picture of her nephew, 22-year-old Orlando Torres, Wednesday night at a candlelight peace vigil at Cole Park. Her nephew just set out for a third tour of duty in Iraq.

"I want Jenna and Barbara (Bush) to go do their time over there if the president thinks this is such a noble cause," McGregor said.

About 70 people gathered at the amphitheater, lighting candles and holding signs supporting the troops and Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq. Sheehan and peace advocates have hunkered down outside George W. Bush's ranch in Crawford asking for a meeting with the president.

Organizers said the vigil is one of 30 in Texas and one of more than 1,500 across the country in support of Sheehan.

"We are here to support every mother and father who runs the risk of losing a child to war," said peace advocate David Dow.

Dow said Sheehan's plight and grief may have struck a chord with Americans. "Americans never wanted to be thought of as an aggressor," Dow said. "We wanted to be thought of as people who bring peace, not more strife."

Many at the vigil expressed support for Sheehan's effort to meet with the president, but most were not optimistic.

"He's too arrogant," said Jim Tansey. "Bush never admits his mistakes."
