News Thursday, 20 March, 2003: There were at least four STAP members keeping vigil all day today in front of the Federal Courthouse. All three network TV affiliates plus KORO and the Caller-Times showed up to interview the attendees. It was a very beautiful, sunny day, and a few of us came away with harsh sunburns. Keith Rowley, Aislynn Campbell, Kim & Delores Dees, Ann Bright, Ed & Tia Desmond, Kip Putnam, Kathryn Williams, and Ann Smith. We all had signs and Keith brought his klang yaw (Thai drum) and drummed up some positive peace vibrations. Most of the response from passersby was positive, but of course there were many dissenters. A group of STAP members spent somewhere from 1 to 1 1/2 hrs with banners and signs at the Federal Courthouse after the President's Wednesday night speech. Ann Bright, Judy Loverde, Khaled and Lydia Zitooni, Ann Fitts, Peggy Dobbins, Kirt Higdon, Richard and Susan Peeples were there. A reporter and a photographer from the Caller Times were there for a while. We had the big Corpus Christi for Peace banner and Ann Bright brought a Peace in the Middle East sign which she and her husband made for the Gulf War in '91. We also had a South Texas Alliance for Peace sign. Ironically, it was a beautiful moonlit evening and there was quite a bit of traffic. An overwhelming number of passersby greeted us with returned peace signs and honking horns. There were just a few negative comments and gestures. Lots of people just didn't look our way. All in all we felt truly good about being there, and supported by many of the folks who rode by. We will be continuing our presence on the corner near the Court House. You will hopefully find it a rewarding experience to express your stop this war sentiment by participating in the vigil. Click here for a "Stop the War" flyer you are welcome to print out. If you are going to make a sign to carry at the vigil, please think about including support for the troops and their families. Anti-Bush signs, and the like, could easily spark confrontation during this time. Please feel free to call the hotline at 853-0023. Susan will be checking for messages. We hope to see you at the meeting tonight at Creative Spirit at 7pm. for older news, see our News Archive |
