Friday, 28 February, 2003:

Thursday night saw much activity for our peace group. About 20 people attended Fern Katz' talk, in which we learned about WAND, WILL, STAND, and our nation's enormous defense budget. There was lively discussion, as seems to be usual for our group. By the time our regular meeting rolled around at 8:30pm, there were about 30 in attendance.

The most important news is the name change. Yes, we tossed about several possible names, and in the end we got pretty rousing support for "South Texas Alliance for Peace" (formerly known as Patriots For America).

We voted to present a resolution at the next city council meeting. The resolution, inspired by those passed by over 100 cities nationwide, urges our Federal government act with the UN and its inspectors in Iraq, and asserts that war should only be the very last resort. See the full text of our "City Council Resolution Against the War in Iraq " on the ACT! page.

We would like everyone who can to attend Tuesday's city council meeting to show support for the resolution. We will be meeting at 3:30pm, inside the council chamber. If you are planning to be there, please call our hotline at 853-0023 and leave your name and phone number so we can have some idea of how many people to expect.

A few people signed up Thursday night to outreach and communicate with our community, but we need more. There will be all sorts of committees, as well. If you want to help send out the message that "Peace is Possible," contact us at peace@lotuscup.com

We are still planning to hold another big Peace March/Rally, with clergy, educators, public officials, community leaders, etc. If you know anyone who would be an excellent speaker, contact Ann Bright or David Owen, or send us an email at peace@lotuscup.com

We haven't set a firm date yet, but we will do this at the next meeting of the Steering Committee March 2, 2003. The date will be announced at the next meeting of the total group.

A correction: please note that, in the Feb 21, 2003 Update (and its accompanying email), Arthur Clarke's name was left off the Steering Committee list.

And the next meeting of South Texas Alliance for Peace (formerly known as Patriots For America) will be next Thursday, March 6, at the Holy Cross Church, 1109 N. Staples, at 7:30pm.
