City Council Resolution Against the War in Iraq

Corpus Christi

RESOLUTION NO.___________

WHEREAS, based on current information no proven linkage has been made between the horrific terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 and the government of Iraq, and
WHEREAS, there is an urgent need for genuine multilateral action to eliminate weapons of mass destruction world wide, and
WHEREAS, governments around the world oppose US unilateral action in regards to Iraq and support the full pursuit of diplomatic resolutions and weapons inspections before any further military action is taken against Iraq, and
WHEREAS, a war with Iraq will jeopardize the lives of American soldiers and will kill many innocent Iraqi civilians, who have already suffered enormously under Saddam Hussein's rule and United Nations sanctions, and
WHEREAS, a war with Iraq would threaten to further destabilize the Middle East, possibly leading to a wider, regional war and increased support for Al Qaeda and other groups dedicated to terrorism, making Corpus Christi with its vital ports and military installations less safe, and
WHEREAS, no aggressive campaign to prepare Corpus Christi has been undertaken and completed, and
WHEREAS, most cities and states are suffering fiscal crises where programs that benefit working people and the poor are being threatened by severe budget cuts. And it has been estimated that a war in Iraq would likely cost the U.S. government over $100 billion, an amount that could go a long way toward meeting our health and education needs, and
WHEREAS, the citizens of Corpus Christi and their local elected officials have the constitutional right, indeed duty, to petition the national government on this matter of grave concern to our community as part of the national and international debate now underway; and
WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Corpus Christi cannot speak for all residents but has been asked by many people to speak out on this momentous issue facing our nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI:

1. Urges the President and Congress to work with and through the United Nations to obtain compliance by Iraq with United Nations Security Council resolutions, and to support fully the return of international weapons inspectors to Iraq for the purpose of immediate disarmament; and
2. Asserts that war should be only the last resort, after exhausting all diplomatic and political means, and that war is not to be undertaken unilaterally or preemptively by the United States or any other country.

RESOLVED, that the Corpus Christi City Council shall forward copies of this resolution to President Bush, Senators Hutchison and Cornyn and to Congressman Solomon Ortiz and all members of the Texas U.S. Congressional delegation.
