SOUTH TEXAS ALLIANCE
FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE
A Season of Peace Fundraiser for you to
"Be the change you want to see in the world"
Proceeds will go to Texans for Peace Charlie Jackson's 4th
trip to Baghdad
www.texansforpeace.org
Where: Home of Jeanne
Adams, 215 Louisiana, Corpus Christi, Texas
When: Saturday, December
6th from 5 to 8 PM
What: Silent Auction,
Food and refreshments
RSVP: Jeanne Adams,
361-882-1133 or Ann Smith, 361-992-1535
Purpose of Charlie's trip:
To visit and network with and provide help to the Women's
Business Center of Baghdad, a Texans for Peace initiative to
assist Iraqi women and professionals to organize, finance, and
operate their business in and surrounding the City of
Baghdad.
This project brings together the
resources and interests of women and supporters from all walks of
life - medical, small business, media, education - to provide
support for women-owned and operated businesses. This is
grassroots development in Iraq and we can give grassroots support
from the people of our community.
Charlie and Alyssa will present
an audio-visual program showcasing how the women of Baghdad are
building their businesses. This is a real opportunity for us to
promote their sense of freedom and economic development.
There will be a silent auction
of some items that Charlie brought back in 2007--a woman's
hand-decorated robe and headdress, beautiful new Koran, posters
from women's resource network. If you can help gather other
items for the silent auction, please call.
Charlie Jackson will be a
presenter at the Coastal Bend Social Forum February 21, 2009 and
report on this trip. He led a delegation of Texans to Amman,
Jordan in 2007 to confer and provide professional help from the
delegation to the women of Baghdad. He hopes to lead another
delegation in the Fall, 2009.
We hope you will be able to join
us on December 6th at 5 pm. If not, please try to send a donation
towards expenses of this trip. "Be the Change."

The Road Home
It is time for the United
States to leave Iraq, without any more delay than the Pentagon
needs to organize an orderly exit.
Like many Americans, we have
put off that conclusion, waiting for a sign that President Bush
was seriously trying to dig the United States out of the disaster
he created by invading Iraq without sufficient cause, in the face
of global opposition, and without a plan to stabilize the country
afterward.
At first, we believed that
after destroying Iraq’s government, army, police and
economic structures, the United States was obliged to try to
accomplish some of the goals Mr. Bush claimed to be pursuing,
chiefly building a stable, unified Iraq. When it became clear
that the president had neither the vision nor the means to do
that, we argued against setting a withdrawal date while there was
still some chance to mitigate the chaos that would most likely
follow.
While Mr. Bush scorns
deadlines, he kept promising breakthroughs — after
elections, after a constitution, after sending in thousands more
troops. But those milestones came and went without any progress
toward a stable, democratic Iraq or a path for withdrawal. It is
frighteningly clear that Mr. Bush’s plan is to stay the
course as long as he is president and dump the mess on his
successor. Whatever his cause was, it is lost.
The political leaders
Washington has backed are incapable of putting national interests
ahead of sectarian score settling. The security forces Washington
has trained behave more like partisan militias. Additional
military forces poured into the Baghdad region have failed to
change anything.
Continuing to sacrifice the
lives and limbs of American soldiers is wrong. The war is sapping
the strength of the nation’s alliances and its military
forces. It is a dangerous diversion from the life-and-death
struggle against terrorists. It is an increasing burden on
American taxpayers, and it is a betrayal of a world that needs
the wise application of American power and principles.

VOICE OF AN
IRAQI
WHAT THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA IS NOT REPORTING
 |
|
Rasouli's
goal -- here and there -- is to build bridges among people of all
religious backgrounds with the message, "One God, one
people." It seems like a good message, but it has been a
tough sell.
Over the three years he has been in Iraq, he has seen violence
increase, friends assassinated and living conditions deteriorate.
Distrust reigns. |
Sami Rasouli, an Iraqi-American
peace activist, will be visiting Corpus Christi on May 10th as
part of his Texas speaking tour. Rasouli was born in Iraq,
immigrated to the U.S. at age 27, and has spent his life here
building a successful small business in Minneapolis. After the
U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, Rasouli became increasingly
concerned about the plight of the Iraqi people, has traveled to
Iraq frequently, and spoken to many audiences in the Midwest,
offering a unique perspective on the U.S. occupation of his home
county.
He will be speaking Thursday,
May 10th at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 6901
Holly Road at an event sponsored by the local Network of
Spiritual Progressives and the Tikkun Community.
Rasouli was recently
interviewed on the Pacifica Network program Democracy Now (LINK:
democracynow.org). He told host Amy Goodman, "As an
embedded first-hand witness in Iraq…I want to share
stories the American public is not aware of and the mainstream
media is not telling."
Public is invited - Donations
appreciated.

THE
COST OF WAR
|
|
| |
The South Texas Alliance for
Peace and Justice
Texans for Peace
Vietnam Veterans Against the War
Subject: Del Mar
College Press Club sponsors Community Forum "The Cost of
War" a film presentation followed by a panel of combat
veterans leading a discussion with local students and interested
citizens
Date and Time: Saturday, February 25, 2006, 2 to 5 p.m.
Location: Del Mar College Harvin Student
Center, Retama Room, 2nd Floor
Baldwin
and Ayers, Corpus Christi, Texas
The documentary film "The Cost of War", produced by
Patrick Phillips, is a moving story featuring real Texas veterans
of past wars. The two of the Viet Nam veterans in the film
will be the presenters at Del Mar College: Dave Collins,
facilitator for discussion and Dr. Ray White, licensed mental
health counselor. They will be joined by Paul Davis, Desert Storm
veteran as well as Lydia Caballero and Cele Castillo, Rio Grande
Valley activists and Vietnam veterans.
The purpose of this Community Forum "The Cost of War"
is to provide an opportunity for local citizens, especially the
young people in the area to come together to view this film--to
listen, question and interact with the combat veterans leading
the panel discussion who have experienced war first hand.
"The Cost of War" gives voice to truth through
the experiences and observations of the veterans and their
families. It is a truth that every citizen of this country
who honestly seeks to "support the troops" must learn.
The Del Mar Press Club, professors and students have been most
helpful to bring this event to the community. Local
veterans groups are involved in this presentation and will
provide a welcome input into the discussion.

We have had lots of success lately-- this
town is waking up to the horrors of this war! We had 65 people at
a fundraiser on Friday night where Charlie Jackson made his
presentation. We had such good TV coverage. Alyssa made his
presentation at TAMU-Kingsville to 100 people. He must have
reached thousands with the media coverage (including the
Caller-Times article, which you can find here in our Press
section). We are thrilled. We have new people involved. The
plans are that we will hold Candlelight Vigils to End the
War at Incarnate Word Academy monthly.
Peace and blessings,
Ann

We have been involved in many and varied
activities: anti-death penalty vigils, anti-war, there are some
things on the calendar that are coming up right away.
We've been working with the sisters at Incarnate Word
and just had a peace vigil on Sunday night, another will be
coming up November 21st at TAMUCC.
The
Caller-Times published an article about Charlie Jackson's
presentation at the UU Church on Saturday evening November
12th. There also was a presentation at TAMU-Kingsville, and a
fund raising dinner and presentation at Jeanne Adams' home on
November 11th.

NEWS RELEASE
MARKETING THE MILITARY IN AREA HIGH SCHOOLS
“Before you join, take a good look at what you’re
getting into . . . . . “
DATE and Time of event: Sunday, June 19, 2005, 2 PM
PLACE: Entrance to the ramp at USS Lexington, Corpus Christi,
Texas
South Texas Alliance for Peace and Justice is initiating a
counter-recruitment effort to correct false impressions created
by military recruiters in their hard sell to students in the
public schools. The STAPJ program will provide students an
opportunity to hear about the realities of military service and
what military enlistment may mean to their young lives. Young
people deserve the chance to make informed and rational decisions
about whether to put their lives at risk. South Texas Alliance
for Peace and Justice expects wide support from concerned
parents, teachers, and faith leaders in the community in this
effort. .
During the summer months, members of the Task Group on
Counter-Recruitment, under the leadership of Kirt Higdon, will
distribute brochures to young people and their parents at popular
gathering spots around Corpus Christi. In the fall, emphasis will
be placed on handing out the brochures and displaying them in
local school and public libraries and making presentations on
campuses. The brochures advise, “Before you join, take a
good look at what you’re getting into.” A strong
opponent of the Iraq War, Higdon says “This government is
asking the young people who are the targets of military
recruiters to risk their lives in a war that is not in our
country’s defense or best interest and is making us more
enemies all over the world.”
The South Texas Alliance for Peace and Justice is made up of
veterans, patriots and concerned citizens who are committed to
providing voices of conscience in this area.
The first distribution of literature will take place at the
entrance to the ramp of the USS Lexington on Sunday June 19 at
2:00pm. Telephone contact Kirt Higdon 361 993-2049.
